DSL Distance vs. Speed

Your phone lines normally terminate at a telco central office, usually nearby. This distance (the length of the phone line between your location and the telco central office) is a very important factor in whether or not you can get DSL, and what speeds you can get. Maximum DSL speed is a function of this distance, the gauge (thickness) of the phone wire used in your locale, and the DSL technology employed.

The fastest DSL that Pathwayz currently offers is ADSL with a maximum download speed of 5.0 Mbps on a single line ("Super Speed" option). The Extended Reach DSL is able to go farther out than normal ADSL distances, but the speeds are a little lower at these distances. Typical download speeds at the Extended Reach distances are from 384 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps. In an effort to acquire the maximum speeds possible with Extended Reach DSL, the phone service is typically not combined onto the same physical line as the DSL. This requires a separate line to be used for phone service, which is the reason for the slight increase in price for the Extended Reach DSL service.

Our ADSLx2 service uses two ADSL lines bonded together to provide twice the speed of regular ADSL, and is also more reliable by using two redundant lines. If one of the two lines fails to function for whatever reason, your connection is still maintained on the other line while steps are taken to repair the failed line. There is no phone service being shared on either of the two physical lines and the latency is much lower than regular ADSL, which provides business class performance, bandwidth, and reliability.

Here are some examples of distance vs. speed for DSL:
Distance in FeetDSL Type and Speed
less than 11,000ADSL - from 3.0 Mbps up to 5.0 Mbps download
11,000 to 17,000ADSL - from 1.5 Mbps up to 3.0 Mbps download
17,000 to 20,000Ext Reach DSL - from 384 Kbps up to 1.5 Mbps download
